چکیده

In addition to routine medications topical indomethacin was applied to one group of 112 eyes and an appropriate placebo was applied to another group of 106 eyes that underwent intracapsular cataract extraction. The investigation was conducted in a prospective double blind fashion over a long period of time in order to demonstrate the effects of indomethacin in preventing the development of cystoid macular oedema. Indomethacin drops were instilled once a day before surgery, twice on the day of surgery, and 3 times daily for 2 weeks postoperatively. The prevalence of cystoid macular oedema as detected by fluorescein angiograms was as follows: in the early period (from 1 to 2 postoperative months), cystoid macular oedema developed in 250% of the indomethacin-treated eyes and in 51 % of the untreated eyes; in the middle period (from 4 to 7 postoperative months), it developed in 11 0% of the former group and 21 % in the latter group; in the late period (from 1 to 1 5 postoperative years) it developed in 9% of the former group and 11 % of the latter group. In both the early and middle periods the difference in prevalence was statistically significant, but in the late period there was no significant difference between the 2 groups. The onset of 'indomethacin-masked cystoid macular oedema' in several treated eyes may account for the insignificant difference in the late period. Prolonged biosynthesis of indomethacin-sensitive materials, including prostaglandins, may be suspected in some aphakic eyes.

Aphakic macular oedema: a two-year follow-up study.

A 2-year follow-up study was carried out on patients known to have developed aphakic macular oedema 6 weeks postoperatively, and the results were compared with those in a control group who had not developed oedema. Four eyes (12%) still had macular oedema, the visual acuities ranging between 6/5 and 6/9. There was no significant difference in visual acuities at 2 years between the 2 groups of p...

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Long term eVect of repeated hyperbaric oxygen therapy on visual acuity in inflammatory cystoid macular oedema

EDITOR,—Cystoid macular oedema is a well known complication of chronic uveitis and is the major cause of visual disability accounting for 29% of blindness and 41% of visual impairment in this group. ±Therapy consists of control of inflammation with both topical and systemic agents. Symptomatic treatment with acetazolamide orally and grid laser photocoagulation have been shown to reduce cystoid ...

Aim To evaluate the long-term follow-up of aphakic and pseudophakic eyes of children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA)-associated uveitis with a special interest in whether intraocular lens implantation increases the risk of developing ocular complications. Methods Data were obtained from the medical records of 29 children (48 eyes) with JIA-associated uveitis operated on for cataract be...

A prospective study

Irvine (I953) emphasized that macular degeneration was a major complication in cataract extraction. Gass and Norton (I966) described the appearance of aphakic cystoid macular oedema as shown by fluorescein angiography in patients who experienced a fall in visual acuity 4 to I2 weeks after cataract extraction. Gass and Norton (i 969) showed that, while the oedema settled in 6 months in 50 per ce...
